GRISHA TITOFF - 1980
A native of Russia, Grisha Titoff moved to Harbin, Manchuria in 1912, and as a young man he was a champion bicycle racer. In 1923, he moved to Seattle, then to Hollywood about 1930. There he appeared in more than a score of Hollywood moves in the 1930s. He remained there until coming to Washington in 1941 where he had a long career as a teacher, concert performer and nightclub entertainer. The restaurant where he appeared was called the Balalaika, just opened on Connecticut Avenue and M Street NW. He lived just a few blocks from that intersection for the remainder of his life, but he traveled widely.
In 1959 and 1960, he appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York in two concerts of Russian music. His last engagement in Washington was from 1967 to 1972, when he appeared in the La Chatelaine dining room of the Mayflower Hotel. The onset of arthritis forced him to retire, but he continued to teach for many years after that. He was a member of the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Over the years he has aided the BDAA, sending materials to the Newsletter and gibing considerable funds to the BDAA for our scholarships.
